It is the 4th largest city in Albania.
Skadar is the center of the Catholic community in Albania. The largest Catholic church in Albania is located here - St. Stephen's Cathedralwhich has long been the biggest on Balkans.
To the west, the city limits Lake Skadarwhich is the largest on the Balkans. Skadar is situated at the confluence of the rivers Kiru, Drinu and Bojanawhich flows out of Lake Skadar and into the Adriatic Sea. All the rivers meet under the medieval castle Rozafa. The castle used to be a fortress, but today most of the buildings are in ruins. The area of the fortress is 9 hectares and from the height of 130m there is a beautiful view of the town, the lake and the two big rivers. Near the fortress is the oldest mosque, the so-called Lead Mosque from 18th century.
