Albanian gastronomy is a great attraction for those who like to enjoy imaginative, fresh and healthy food. The local cuisine is Mediterranean, but it also has Balkan and oriental influences, which adds to its originality.
The typical Albanian diet contains a large amount of fresh vegetables (perime), fruit (fruta) and other agricultural products. Albanian growers often do not have the means to buy agricultural chemicals, so their products are in many cases in organic quality, and at a price several times lower than ours. You can still buy seasonal fruit and vegetables at the market that were still basking under the Balkan sun just a short while ago. Don't forget to try Albanian olives (ullinj)!
The mountain pastures are a paradise for sheep and goats. Albanians love meat (mish), in every possible way. The most commonly consumed species are beef (mish shed), veal (mish viçi) or pork (mish derri), but unlike in the Czech Republic, it is common to see lamb (mish qingji) and goat (mish keci). Try them, compared to Czech prices they are in Albania for a pittance.
