A month as a digital nomad in Shkodër: internet, cafés, season
Practical info for nomads planning a monthly stay in Albania. What actually works, where you can work, what the season looks like.
Shkodër is a good monthly base for nomads who want calm without too much isolation. Skip it for short tourism; for 3-4 weeks with work it is a reasonable compromise: cheaper than Tirana, better internet than the deep countryside, day trips within reach. Here is what to know upfront.
Internet: realistic expectations
The apartment has wired Vodafone Albania, typically 80-150 Mbps down / 20-30 Mbps up, 30-50 ms latency to the EU. For everyday work (email, Slack, GitHub, video calls) it is more than enough.
What we do not recommend you rely on without testing first:
- Continuous 4K streams during work hours
- Large cloud builds with >1 GB uploads in rapid succession
- Self-hosting servers from the apartment (no public IP)
If you have specific requirements (minimum upload, latency to a given AWS region, guaranteed 24/7 uptime), write before booking: we will run a current speed test and describe the real situation. No “1 Gbit gigabit Wi-Fi for nomads” promises here.
Backup: One Telecommunications mobile data (~ €10 / 25 GB / month, prepaid at any local shop in Shkodër) as a tethering backup if the wired drops. In practice it helps maybe 1-2× per month.
Where to work outside the apartment
Shkodër has no formal coworking, but several cafés effectively work as a quiet workspace:
- Caffe Mediteran: stronger Wi-Fi than most, good morning espresso, opens 7 a.m.
- Bar Restaurant Tradita: terrace, calm 9-11, lively after.
- Caffe Era: more locals, fewer tourists, good for afternoon focus.
- Pizza Mo: when it rains and you want a beer and salad with your laptop.
For online meetings stay in the apartment, not a café: street noise and music are everywhere.
Season: when yes, when no
- April-June: ideal. 18-28 °C, calm before the tourist season, cafés full but not packed, beaches open from late May.
- July-August: hot (35-40 °C), expensive beaches, occasional power outages during storms. Workable, but uncomfortable to sleep without A/C.
- September-October: second-best window. Post-season, mild weather, monuments open.
- November-March: cool (5-15 °C), occasional rain, limited trip options. Fine for nomads if you do not need to travel a lot. The apartment is heated.
Practical things you will deal with
Banks and money
- ATMs: Raiffeisen, Credins, BKT: no issue, usually 1 000 lek / withdrawal cap = ~ €10. Avoid Euronet (high fees).
- Card: widely accepted in cafés and larger restaurants, but smaller shops are cash only. Always carry ~ 2 000 lek.
- Exchange offices beat ATM rates.
Mail and deliveries
- Albanian post exists but is unreliable.
- DHL, UPS, FedEx deliver to the apartment address; we will sign if needed. Tell us in advance.
- Amazon does not ship to Albania. eBay sometimes does.
Sport and health
- Gyms: Pulse Gym, Gold’s Gym, ~ €30 / month, open 7 a.m.: 10 p.m.
- Running: along the lake, calm Park Liria, down to the Buna river. Safe after dark: the city is calm.
- Healthcare: basic at the city hospital, private clinics for physiotherapy and dentistry. EU EHIC works, private is more comfortable.
Community
A real nomad community in Shkodër does not exist. For meeting people:
- Tirana is 1.5 h by car: weekend coworkings and meetups.
- Online digital nomad communities in Albania: Reddit r/Albania, Facebook “Digital Nomads Albania”.
- Local expats meet at Caffe Era and the English-Albanian Pub.
When Shkodër is not for you
- You want a party scene → Tirana, not here.
- You need 1 GB upload daily → infrastructure does not deliver.
- No car and unwilling to use the bus → the city is walkable, but day trips without a car are hard.
Set up the stay
We rent the apartment long-term to nomads at 15 000 CZK / month (~ €600) + €25 one-off cleaning. Shorter stays cost more per night: for nomads the monthly rate pays off from 28 nights upward.
Check availability or read more about the long-stay setup. If you have concrete work requirements (latency, upload, second monitor), write us before you book.
