Lake Shkodra in practice: which side, when, how

Lake Shkodra has two sides — Albanian and Montenegrin. How they compare, where it pays to be, what to do, boats, cars, kids.

Lake Shkodra is the largest lake in the Balkans, shared by Albania and Montenegro. From the apartment you see the Albanian side from the balcony; the Montenegrin side is an hour by car. Here is a comparison of the two sides and what to do when.

Albanian side (Shkodër and around)

Plus:

  • 5 minutes by car from the apartment to the water.
  • Shirokë — the prettiest base for boats, fish restaurants, calm.
  • Beach access free, umbrellas €5–8 / day.
  • Cycle path is flat, fine for kids.
  • Fewer tourists than the Montenegrin side.

Minus:

  • Fewer official attractions (unlike the Skadar National Park in Montenegro).
  • Shallow near the shore — not for swimmers who want a deep dive.
  • Mosquitoes after sunset in summer, bring repellent.

What to do

  • Boat tour from Shirokë — 1.5–2 h, €15 adult / €8 child, the captain points out birds and villages.
  • Walk along the shore from Zogaj to Shirokë — 4 km, easy, beautiful photos.
  • Lunch at a restaurant on the pier — fresh fish (carp, eel), €10–15 per person.
  • Cycling from Shkodër around the lake — 25 km loop, asphalt or compacted gravel.
  • Birdwatching — winter and spring are best (cormorants, pelicans, occasional flamingos).

Montenegrin side (national park)

Plus:

  • National park with organised trails, signs, info centre.
  • Better-marked footpaths and viewpoints.
  • Virpazar — charming village with bridges and a fishing tradition.
  • Deeper water, swimming is better.

Minus:

  • 1–1.5 h by car from the apartment via the Hani i Hotit border.
  • Border crossing 10–30 min wait in season.
  • More expensive restaurants and boats (~ €25–35 cruise).
  • More tourists, especially in July–August.

What to do

  • Boats from Virpazar — 1.5–3 h trips, various prices.
  • Pavlova Strana viewpoint — 30 min by car from Virpazar, the classic postcard photo of the lake bend.
  • Lesendro trail — short walk to the water fortress.
  • Wineries — Plantaže, plus smaller family ones, tastings €10–20.

Recommendations by stay type

  • 3–4 night stay: Albanian side is enough, half day boat + lunch.
  • Week-long stay: one day on each side, compare yourself.
  • Monthly stay: Albanian side multiple times (running, biking, lunch), Montenegro 1–2 trips.
  • With small kids: Albanian side, shallow water, no border to cross.

Practical info

  • Hani i Hotit border: open 24/7, ID needed (passport or EU national ID). Rental car — confirm it is allowed to enter Montenegro (often a green card needed).
  • Currency in Montenegro: euro (unlike Albanian lek).
  • Mobile data: activate EU roaming in advance. In Montenegro EU rates apply (free roaming).
  • Boat season: April–October. In winter some boats do not run.
  • For birdwatchers: February–April (migration), October–November (return).

What to bring to the lake

  • Insect repellent — mosquitoes by water are strong, especially after sunset.
  • Hat — sun on water is stronger than it looks.
  • Binoculars — if you care about birds, they make a big difference.
  • Swimsuit and towel — even if you do not plan to swim, you will end up in.
  • Cash in lek (Albanian side) or euros (Montenegrin side) — boats often no card.

Best one-day program

Albanian side: breakfast in the apartment → 9:30 boat from Shirokë (2 h) → lunch at a pier restaurant → afternoon walk along the shore or siesta in the apartment → evening dinner in town.

Montenegrin side: depart 8:00 → 9:30 border → 10:30 in Virpazar → boat → lunch → afternoon Pavlova Strana viewpoint → 18:00 back in Shkodër for dinner.

Planning?

The apartment is 5 minutes by car from the lake, ideal as a base for both sides. Check availability or read more about the surroundings of Shkodër.
