Tirana to Shkodër: car, bus, or shared transfer
Practical guide to getting from Tirana airport to Shkodër. Times, prices, what makes sense when, and when to rent a car.
Shkodër (Albanian: Shkodra) sits about 95 kilometres north of Tirana International Airport (TIA). On the A1 and SH1 motorways the drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Here is a quick overview of how to get to us.
By car (recommended for most guests)
If you travel as a family, carry more luggage, or plan trips to Theth and around Lake Shkodra, your own car is clearly the most flexible option. The A1 motorway out of Tirana heading north is well-signed and in good condition.
- Distance: 95 km
- Time: 1.5–2 h depending on traffic (Tirana rush hour mid-morning and late afternoon)
- Tolls: none
- Parking in Shkodër: street parking near the apartment, usually no problem
Rental companies at TIA: Sixt, Europcar, Hertz and several local firms (often cheaper — e.g. Avis Albania or OK Rent). A small car starts around €25/day in high season, under €15 off-season. Make sure your insurance explicitly covers Albania (some EU policies do not by default).
We also have a local rental contact: +355 68 408 8008. Mention “Martin from Czech Republic with apartment in Shkodër”. It may be more expensive, but the practical advantage is a simple €100 cash deposit, returned immediately when you return the car. If you mainly plan to stay in the city, it often makes more sense to skip the car and use the free bikes at the apartment.
Tip: If you land late, pick the car up the next morning — you save on overnight parking and avoid driving unfamiliar mountain roads while tired.
By bus (cheapest)
Direct buses from the Veriu terminal in northern Tirana run regularly to Shkodër. From the airport you can reach the Veriu terminal for around €3, then take a bus to Shkodër for around €5. It is the least comfortable option and mainly makes sense if you miss the direct shuttle.
- Price: 350–400 lek (~ €3.5–4) per ride Tirana → Shkodër
- Time: 1.5–2 h depending on stops
- Frequency: roughly hourly from 5:30 to 19:00
- Comfort: standard intercity coach, A/C, no WC, no Wi-Fi
Ideal if you travel solo or as a couple with light luggage and want to save. If Hermes Airport Shuttle is running directly from the airport, it is much more comfortable. From the Shkodër bus station the apartment is 5 minutes by taxi (200–300 lek).
Shared transfer / minivan
Companies like Albania Experience Bus or Skipper Travel offer shared transfers from the airport directly to Shkodër for €15–20 per person. Booked online in advance. The advantage: door-to-door without changing transport.
By train (for nostalgics only)
The Albanian rail network is under reconstruction and passenger service to Shkodër does not currently run reliably. If you love slow travel, check the latest status directly with HSH (Hekurudha Shqiptare) just before the trip — do not plan a connection on it.
What we recommend, by traveller type
- Families with kids and luggage: rental car.
- Couples / solo travellers, 3–7 night stay: Hermes / shared transfer, or bus + taxi.
- 3+ people: taxi from the airport straight to the house usually gives the best comfort-to-price ratio.
- Nomads staying a month without trips: Hermes or bus is enough, rent a car for 1–2 days during the stay; in the city the free apartment bikes are often enough.
- Late night arrival: taxi from the airport straight to Shkodër (~ €90–110) or overnight in Tirana.
What to do next
