Valbona to Theth hike: crossing the Albanian Alps

Seventeen kilometres over a 1,800 m pass. How to plan the hike from Shkodër, how much time to allow, when to go and which direction to walk.

The crossing between Valbona and Theth is Albania’s best known hike and for many people the main reason they come here. It goes over the Valbona pass at roughly 1,800 metres and connects two mountain valleys with no road between them.

In our article about Theth we say it makes no sense as a day trip from Shkodër. Here is how to do it properly.

The hike in numbers

Distanceabout 17 km
Time6 to 9 hours including breaks
Ascentroughly 900 m
Highest pointValbona pass, around 1,800 m
Difficultymoderate to hard, but no climbing
Waymarksred and white marks along the whole route
Seasonroughly June to October

Strong hikers do it in four to five hours, with children or at a slower pace count on ten. Nothing technical awaits you, no ropes or via ferrata, but it is a long day of steady climbing on a rocky path.

Which direction

It works both ways and the route is marked in both. Most people walk from Theth to Valbona because the climb is more evenly spread from that side. The opposite direction, Valbona to Theth, suits you when you arrive over Komani Lake and want to finish the loop back in Shkodër.

When to go

  • June to October is the main season. Earlier there is still snow on the pass.
  • Mid June to mid September is the safest window.
  • July and August are the busiest, guesthouses fill up.
  • June and September give you the same weather with fewer people.
  • Start early in the morning. Afternoons in the Alps often cloud over and bring storms.

How to fit it around Shkodër

The hike itself is one day, but the whole thing takes at least two days, realistically three. The most common loop looks like this:

  1. Shkodër to Theth on the morning furgon, leaving around 07:00, fare about 12 EUR, journey 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
  2. Night in Theth at a family guesthouse.
  3. Hike to Valbona, a full day.
  4. Night in Valbona.
  5. Valbona to Fierza by minibus, then the ferry from Fierza to Koman at 13:00 and a transfer back to Shkodër. The connection from Valbona to the ferry costs around 8 to 10 EUR.

Book your place on the ferry in advance. Outside high season the sailings are reduced and with a car or a van the capacity is strictly limited, so do not head to the pier without a reservation. Messaging the operator on WhatsApp works best, and we list all the contacts in our Komani Lake guide.

You can also reverse it: morning ferry from Koman, minibus from Fierza to Valbona around midday, night in Valbona, the crossing to Theth the next day and the furgon back to Shkodër, which leaves Theth late morning around eleven.

What to bring

  • Solid boots. The path is rocky and loose in places.
  • At least two litres of water per person. There are a few springs and one or two cafés, but do not count on them.
  • Layers. It is windy on the pass even in August.
  • Cash in lekë. Guesthouses and stalls along the way do not take cards.
  • An offline map. There is mostly no signal on the route.
  • Sunscreen and a hat. Much of the route has no shade.

Do you need a guide?

No. The route is waymarked along its whole length and in season plenty of people walk it. A guide makes sense if you go outside the main season, take children along, or simply want someone else to handle the logistics. Guesthouses in Theth and Valbona arrange guides routinely.

If the crossing is too much

The hike is not for everyone and with small children there is no point forcing it. There is another way to get a strong mountain experience: rent a 4x4 and drive the road from Prekal to Theth. The scenery is breathtaking and it is a more adventurous and authentic way to see the mountains.

Where to leave your luggage

You do not need to carry a big bag over the pass. Leave it at our apartment in Shkodër, take only a two day pack into the mountains and pick up the rest when you return. That is the main practical advantage of having a base in Shkodër.

Go sooner rather than later

The Albanian lek has been strengthening for years. A euro that bought around 140 lekë a decade ago is worth about 94 today. If you pay in euros, your holiday gets more expensive every year, so the sooner you go the better.
